New MTV Katsomo transformed using agile methods

Nitor and Talent Base have fully transformed MTV's Katsomo on-demand video streaming service. The Katsomo service allows users to watch the channels MTV3, Sub, AVA and MTV. Some of the shows are available for free, others for a payment.

MTV's aim was to update the service with regard to its appearance, usability and certain technical aspects. Functionality during peak hours was highly important. The solution had to meet contemporary demands both in terms of technology and future development.

"A service like this has to endure significant changes in user activity. Reliability was therefore our main priority. The service gets millions of visits each month and sports events increase this amount remarkably. During the busiest hours, the system has to deal with a large number of transactions within a short period of time", says MTV's Jyri Kyllönen.

The user experience was brought up to date with a fresh appearance and responsive user interface, which made the mobile browser version obsolete. Payment handling applications were built with entirely new technology. Maintenance became easier and more suitable for future development in devices as well as changes in user habits.

”The project saw us charting commercial and technical requirements, describing user roles and work expenses and defining the functionalities of each page. Solution planning and software development were made following the principles of agile and sustainable software development, thus guaranteeing the success of the project”, say Tommi Laitila of Nitor and Mikko Meriluoto of Talent Base.

The updated service was launched to the public in stages during spring. First new functionalities were introduced in mid-March.
