Nitor modernizes the universities' information systems
Nov 13, 2015, 9:00 AM
The modernization project of the student affairs information systems in the universities of Helsinki, Tampere, Jyväskylä, and Aalto University is moving forward.
In the project, all services needed by students, professors, and other university staff are transformed into cloud based services. The project’s aim is to create an easy and intuitive tool for e.g. study plans, course enrollments, evaluations, and maintaining student records.
“From now on, all data that doesn’t contain personal information will be provided in an open interface. Anyone can thus use it to develop useful applications,” says Nitor’s Jussi Mononen.
The new system will replace the current outdated Oodi system. Also a multitude of manual operations will be automated.
The system's development is a joint operation where Nitor is one of the companies leading the development work. The collaboration with university staff has been seamless.
”The project progresses in an agile way, piece by piece. This has helped everybody to grasp all the different aspects to be taken into consideration when building a data system for study related issues”, says Mononen.
The goal is a flexible system which enables also the development and integration of new applications in the future.
Once the information system is ready, its further development will be taken over by a company jointly owned by the universities. Student registers and other student-related data will stay in the universities’ own servers. Other kind of data, such as courses and schedules, will be offered as a cloud based service.
